A proposed amendment to the Canadian Telecommunications Act would establish a nationwide do-not-call list that telemarketers would be required to use in Canada to curtail unsolicited outbound calls.
If this legislation is approved by Parliament, the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) would have the power to fine telemarketers $1,500 for each consumer violation and $15,000 for each business-to-business telemarketing violation.
The CRTC would be empowered to contract with a third-party to maintain the list and operate a do-not-call service.
“The size of the penalties show we are serious about addressing the issue of unwanted telemarketing,” said David L. Emerson, minister of industry in a prepared statement.
