Brookstone Reverses Fortunes, Shows Second Quarter Profit

Tools cataloger and retailer Brookstone Inc., Nashua, NH, reported second-quarter net income of $9,000, compared to a net loss of $475,000 in second-quarter 1998. Sales for the quarter increased 19.3%, from $53.8 million to 64.1 million.

For the first half of fiscal 1999, the company reported a net loss of $4.6 million, a slight improvement over a first-half 1998 loss of $4.9 million on a 15.8% sales increase, from $91.7 million to $106.2 million.

In a statement company president and CEO Michael Anthony attributed the turnaround to increasing the firm’s proprietary branded product mix to more than 50% of its sales; improving Brookstone’s marketing, packaging and in-store communications; opening airport locations that are profitable throughout the year; and improving the results of its direct marketing business.
