Britain’s Postal Employees Threaten to Strike

A union representing Britain’s post office employees has been authorized to call a strike in a dispute over pay, which threatens to cripple the country’s postal system.

A ballot taken last week found that about two-thirds of workers voted to take measures up to and including a strike, the Communication Workers Union said, according to a news report.

Union General Secretary Billy Hayes said there would be no strike for at least two weeks and held hope that an agreement could be reached with Consignia, the renamed British Post Office.

The union, which represents 145,000 postal workers, wants a 20 percent pay rise over the next two years, taking workers’ basic earnings to 300 pounds ($423) a week. Consignia has said it has offered 2.0-2.5 percent, the report said.
