Bertelsmann Ponders Sale of 25 Units

Germany’s Bertelsmann AG is considering selling 25 small and medium-sized units, including specialist science publisher BertelsmannSpringer, according to the Associated Press.

The firm said it was willing to sell the units to focus on its core business.

“We want to concentrate our financial strength on our mass markets–on television, the publisher Random House, magazines and music along with our direct client business in book clubs and media services,” Middelhoff said in the report.

Bertelsmann’s main divisions include broadcaster RTL, publisher Random House, magazine group Gruner + Jahr and music group BMG, whose top names include Whitney Houston, the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears.

In May, the company said it would acquire the assets of Internet music-swap company Napster.
