Barnesandnoble.com, the online branch of bookseller Barnes & Noble, Inc., had 1998 sales of $70.2 million, exceeding the company’s projection of $60-$65 million for the year. The figure is 381% over the site’s sales in fiscal 1997.
The company attributes the exceeded projection to a highly successful holiday season. The site’s fourth-quarter sales were $31.1 million, which was also 380% higher than fourth-quarter 1997 levels.
For the year, the bookseller’s retail sales were $3.0 billion, an 8% increase over the previous year. Fourth quarter 1998 sales were $1.03 billion, up 7.2% from $960 million.
