Fans of FOX Broadcasting’s “American Idol” talent show will now be able to vote for their favorite contestants via text messaging from Redmond, WA-based AT&T Wireless, an official sponsor of the show’s second season. Each week, customers will be able to send a text message to an abbreviated number–IDOLS01 — which will be shown on the air next to the standard call-in number following each performance.
AT&T Wireless is also planning a sweepstakes around the show and will make available downloadable content of the show’s contestants. The company says this is the first time text messaging will be used with a TV show in the U.S.
