Android Takes 54% of Mobile Ad Impressions in January

The latest “Mobile Mix” report from Millennial Media shows that Android accounted for 54 percent of smart-phone ad impressions in January. However, Apple iOS ad requests grew the quickest during the month.

According to the report, Apple was the top device manufacturer in January, claiming 26.07 percent of the market, a month-over-month increase of 24 percent. HTC followed with 20.98 percent, while Samsung got 15.20 percent of the market, up 36 percent from the previous month.

Research in Motion (RIM) was fourth with 11.09 percent of the market, while Motorola followed with 8.72 percent.

The Apple iPhone was the top mobile device with 15.37 percent of the market in January, followed by the iPod Touch with 8.08 percent and the HTC Nexus One with 7.80 percent.

The BlackBerry Curve followed with 5.78 percent, while the HTC G2 Touch Hero was fifth with 3.01 percent. The Apple iPad was trailed with 2.61 percent of the market, followed by the HTC EVO with 2.30 percent, the Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S with 2.03 percent, the Samsung Freeform (SCH-R350) with 1.94 percent and the HTC Aria with 1.93 percent.

Overall, smart phones accounted for 23 of the top 30 mobile devices in January, according to Millennial Media.

Smart phones also accounted for 66 percent of smart phone, feature phone and connected device impressions in January, up 10 percent month-over-month. Of this, 54 percent of impressions came from Android devices, while 28 percent came from iOS devices and 14 percent from RIM devices.

Feature phones accounted for 25 percent of impressions, while connected devices accounted for 9 percent.

Fifty-one percent of devices observed were of the touch-screen variety in January, while 19 percent were touch screen and QWERTY, 19 percent were QWERTY and 11 percent were keypad.

When it came to carriers, 23 percent of devices used Wi-Fi, a 21 percent increase from the previous month. Meanwhile, 20 percent were on Verizon, 13 percent were on Sprint-Nextel, 11 percent were on T-Mobile and 9 percent were on AT&T.

The U.S. was the top country in January by impressions, followed by the U.K., Canada, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, France, Australia, China and Mexico.

Symbian was the top global OS when ranked by Web usage, though this will surely change after Nokia yielded its phones to the Windows Phone OS. iOS followed with 24 percent, while BlackBerry had 17 percent, Android had 13 percent, Sony Ericsson had 4 percent, Samsung had 4 percent and other operating systems had 7 percent.

Music and entertainment apps ranked No. 1 when it came to global revenue, followed by games, social networking, mail and messaging, weather, news and current events, sports, books and reference, health and fitness, and automotive.

Apple ad requests grew 47 percent month-over-month, while Android request grew 32 percent and RIM request remained flat.
