American Eagle Outfitters CMO to Resign

Kathy Savitt, American Eagle Outfitter’s chief marketing officer, is resigning from her post, a company spokesperson confirmed yesterday.

Savitt, who has been with the company since 2006, is credited with trying to spark sales for the teen retailer with such promotions as distributing free movie tickets to those customers who tried on a pair of jeans in store. Her last day is Jan. 30.

The company has no short-term plans to fill Savitt’s position, and it may not replace the position at all, spokesperson Jani Strand said. In the meantime, the marketing duties will be handled by existing staff representing each of the company’s brands, she said.

Prior to joining American Eagle Outfitters, she was vice president of strategic communications, content and initiatives for Amazon.com. In that role, Savitt as in charge of global brand management, external and internal strategic communications, entertainment and original programming, worldwide PR, and all offline marketing programs. In addition, she led the company’s gifting and holiday customer experience programs.

Before that, Savitt was president and co-founder of MWW/Savitt where she counseled more than 150 corporate clients.

In other news, the company appointed Roger Markfield to the newly-created role of vice chairman and executive creative director. Markfield, the former chief merchandising officer and co-CEO of American Eagle Outfitters, will work with the creative team within the AE brand, on design, merchandising and marketing.

American Eagle Outfitters operates more than 950 namesake stores, more than 100 aerie intimate apparel stores and more than two dozen Martin + Osa stores.
