Amazon.com recently unveiled customer video reviews on its site, which allows customers to post their reviews of products in WMV, MPEG, Quicktime, or AVI formats.
Up until now, video product reviews were mostly left to the “professionals” at Web sites such as CNET. However, with the emergence and increased accessibility of online videos to the everyday consumer, it makes sense that an e-commerce giant like Amazon would allow consumers to post their own reviews.
This will enhance the user experience on product detail pages on the site. Instead of reading plain text reviews that are summed up with a capricious five-star system, customer review videos will be valuable for many products, especially those that are more technology focused. The value of CNET video reviews was that a viewer could read, hear, and see how good or bad a new product was, while the reviewer showed off a product’s actual functionality in the video review.
Will these videos take away viewership from sites like CNET? Probably not. There will always be value in video reviews produced and hosted by experts who have professional credentials to their name.
