Aetna has increased its capacity for filling prescriptions by mail from 1.5 million to 7.6 million annually. The company said its increased capacity is due to investments in new systems and equipment.
The actual volume of prescriptions filled by mail has increased from 67,000 in February 2003 to more than 400,000 as of April this year.
The Aetna Rx Home Delivery division has grown from a single shift to multiple shifts for production and administration, including weekends.
Aetna began offering pharmaceuticals by mail early in 2003, when it purchased a pharmacy from Eckerd Health Services. Aetna has more than 8 million insured customers eligible for prescription drug benefits.
