Children’s thong underwear has begun disappearing from some Abercrombie & Fitch stores in the Milwaukee area, and more stores are likely to follow suit.
Abercrombie came under attack this week for marketing thong underwear in children’s sizes at its Abercrombie stores with words like “eye candy” and “wink wink” printed on the front. The stores target children ages 7 to 14.
Parents were outraged and a number of groups reacted angrily to the line of clothing including the American Decency Association (ADA) and the American Family Association.
New Albany, OH-based A&F had defended its position.
“The underwear for young girls was created with the intent to be lighthearted and cute,” Abercrombie said in a statement released earlier this week. “Any misrepresentation of that is purely in the eye of the beholder.
Officials could not be reached for comment last night.
Some news reports told stories of angry mothers confronting store clerks with the underwear who admitted receiving complaints from other mothers.
This is not the first time A&F has riled family groups, parents and state officials over its racy marketing tactics.
