Abercrombie Cancels Racy Quarterly Magalog

Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co., has canceled the holiday issue of its controversial magalog in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

“It (the magazine) tends to be very irreverent and funny,” Hampton Carney, a spokesman told Reuters. “I don’t think the country would have received it properly. It seemed out of step with the solemn mood we’re all in.”

A&F Quarterly, includes partially nude models and suggestive articles, in an effort to boost the clothing retailer’s brand among college-age customers. Abercrombie said it would donate the savings from printing the magazine, estimated at about $1.5 million, to Sept. 11 attack relief efforts.

The magalog, which costs $6.00 an issue, or $12.00 for a year-long subscription, has drawn the ire of politicians and parents’ groups, who consider it obscene and not appropriate for young people. It circulates about 200,000 copies per issue.

Subscribers will get an extra issue due to the cancellation and publication will start again with the spring issue, Carney said.
