2,901 Dot-Com Jobs Lost In November

Last month, a total of 2,901 jobs were lost in dot-com companies — the lowest figure since July 2000, according to outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas.

According to news reports, the November figure is 40% lower than October’s 4,840 and 67% below that of November 2000. The tally also makes up about 3% of the year’s total of 98,522.

The 1,614 lost technology jobs accounted for most of the sector’s cuts, far exceeding the portal category’s 400 cuts. Financial businesses saw a fair number of reductions, ranking third with 348, Challenger said.

“Dot-coms are still being affected by loss of online advertising revenue and the hesitancy of financial backers, making this industry all the more tenuous,” firm president John Challenger said in a statement.
