It never fails to amaze me how direct mail holds up a mirror to American life. That includes the dark side.
Take the letter sent in March 1939 by a group called the Committee of Mercy Inc. Obviously, all involved saw themselves as humanists, including board members like French ambassador Paul Claudel, authors Andre Maurois and Paul Valery, Vermont Gov. George Aiken and U.S. Sens. Champ Clark and Claude Pepper.
