The Weather Channel is encouraging viewers to contribute content about their personal commitment to ecology in a campaign to hype Earth Day.
Some user-generated “green-ette” segments culled from those submissions will be used on-air and online in March as a prelude to Earth Day on April 22. Ecology-conscious viewers are invited to answer the question, “What are you doing to help save the planet?” with photos, text and 30-second videos.
People 13 years or older can upload content to http://www.weather.com, http://www.weather.com/forecastearth or http://www.theweatherchannelkids.com/ through April.
The Weather Channel has fielded thousands of submissions thus far, according to Meredith Fierman Smith, TWC vice president of strategic marketing.
It’s all part of TWC’s ongoing commitment to focus on the impact of climate change.
The network is also running content tied to Earth Day. A special edition of TWC’s “Forecast Earth” called “State of the Planet” also is set to air on April 19 and 20. Five-minute “Forecast Earth” segments and briefs will air during the ensuing week.
“This is really aimed at creating a dialogue,” Smith said. “No idea is too small or too big. We really want to raise everybody’s consciousness on the subjects of climate and climate change.”
The cable channel is promoting the campaign with on-air spots and banners on its own Web site and other sites.
