Visitors to shopping sites during Thanksgiving week increased by 43% compared to the same week last year.
According to the Jupiter Media Metrix Online Shopping Index, the number of unique visitors jumped from 35.2 million to 50.2 million over last year.
Compared with last year, traffic to retail sites on the Friday after Thanksgiving was up 68%; on Saturday it increased 59%; and on Sunday it climbed 55%.
The peak shopping days online were the same as last year–the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, when there were 21.2 million, 20.2 million and 18.9 million visitors, respectively. Thanksgiving had the least amount of visitors with 13.7 million.
The major brick-and-mortar sites outpaced the Internet pureplays in percent traffic growth compared with last year. Walmart.com, Target.com and Barnesandnoble.com all grew by at least 40% in average daily unique visitors versus last year.
The top three visited sites are Ebay.com, Amazon.com and Mypoints.com.
