USPS Proposes Revising Addressing Standards for Letters

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

The U.S. Postal service is proposing revisions to its addressing standards for letter-size pieces mailed at automation, presorted and carrier route rates.

Under these proposals, all letters mailed at discount rates must be addressed using a minimum of 8-point type. For automation rate letters, the lines and the characters in the address must not touch or overlap, and each element on the address line may be separated by no more than three blank character spaces.

The USPS said it proposed these changes to improve address readability for its high-speed processing systems and for letter carriers during delivery.

In a Federal Register filing Wednesday, the USPS noted that legible, standardized address information enhances the processing and delivery of mail, reduces undeliverable-as-addressed mail and helps reduce costs for all parties through improved efficiency.

The postal service will accept comments on these proposals until Dec. 10.
