THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE is developing a database that will allow customers to track their own mail and give postal officials a better handle on mail flows and volume shifts, according to Norm Lorentz, senior vice president and chief technology officer. Speaking at April’s MailCom conference in Atlantic City, NJ, Lorentz identified three initiatives that the USPS developed from an “electronic warehouse” by linking all its information systems to create what he described as “an information-rich mail stream.” In less than three years, he said, those initiatives will enable all mailers-instead of just Express Mail and high-volume package marketers-to track the movement of their mail. The technology will help the USPS cut costs and improve service through better and more up-to-date information, he added.
