The U.S. Postal Service wants catalogers and periodicals publishers to pay more to send their books to Mexico and overseas.
Postal officials, currently seeking the Postal Rate Commission’s support for a domestic rate hike next January–averaging 6.4 percent–unveiled the plan Tuesday in the Federal Register.
They gave no indication of when the proposed hike in the surface rates for regular printed matter, small packages, periodicals and books would go into effect in that notice.
International rates by law are exempt from PRC review and can be raised or lowered at any time the USPS sees fit.
According to the Federal Register notice, which seeks mailer comments by March 31, the USPS plans to raise the surface rate for a 5 ounce catalog or small packet going to Mexico by 30 cents–to $1.80 from $1.50. And, plans to raise the price of sending a 15 ounce catalog or package to Mexico by 48 cents –to $2.26 from $1.88.
The USPS also proposes to cut the charge for a 1 pound package bound for Mexico by 61 cents, dropping the price to $3.14 from $3.77. The cost of sending the same package to all other countries, except Canada, would stay a $4.88.
The USPS plans to boost the cost of sending a 5 ounce magazine or newspaper to Mexico by 9 cents to $1.13 from 94 cents, and hike the price of sending the same publication to all other countries, except Canada, by 14 cents to $1.05 cents from 91 cents.
Finally, the USPS wants to raise the price of sending a one pound book to Mexico to $2.26 from $1.88, and to all other countries (except Canada) to $2.24 from $1.87. The cost of sending a 5 pound book to Mexico would go up by $1.38 to $8.26 from $6.88, while the charge to send that book to all other countries, except Canada, would increase by $1.45 to $8.11 from $6.76 under the plan.
