The U.S. Postal Service plans to offer direct mailers a computerized program to validate mailing addresses down to the actual delivery point.
The software is expected to be available this fall.
According to postal officials, the program uses new proprietary technology that mailers can incorporate into existing address-matching software to find locations. That data can then be compared with existing USPS address records.
Officials say this effort will trim mail processing and delivery costs. Also, it may help mailers cut fees by reducing the amount of undeliverable mail due to inaccurate or incomplete addresses while saving the cost of return postage.
