The U.S. Postal Service needs a profound overhaul to overcome financial and operational problems that threaten its ability to provide basic postal service, said a General Accounting Office report.
According to news reports, higher operating costs, longstanding labor problems, rising debt and increased competition from e-mail and commercial delivery services will all converge in the next decade to challenge the Postal Service’s financial viability, said David M. Walker, comptroller general of the U.S. and head of the General Accounting Office, which issued the report.
Congress should consider changing the structure of the postal service to meet those challenges, Walker told the Senate Government Affairs Committee yesterday.
