A local telemarketing company will benefit from political pressure to move a call center for welfare recipients back to Missouri, according to the St. Joseph, MO News-Press.
The toll-free help line moved to India last year.
USA 800, which has operations in St. Joseph and Raytown, MO, began taking inbound calls today for the Missouri Department of Social Services.
State reports said the move would bring 15 to 20 jobs to Missouri, but officials from USA 800 didn’t offer a breakdown between call centers in St. Joseph and Raytown, where USA 800 is based.
USA 800’s state contract marks a reversal from the recent trend of telemarketing jobs moving to India, where wages are cheaper. Aegis Communications closed its St. Joseph call center last spring after the company, which employed 250, lost business to overseas competition.
