This week, the “No Kidding” award goes to online security company Sophos, which last week in its annual Security Threat Management Report “predicted” that Bill Gates’ 2004 prediction that spam would be a thing of the past by 2006 stands little chance of coming true.
Even sillier than the prediction, however, were the media outlets that covered this “story” as if it were serious news.
“Bill Gates’ prediction of January 2004 that spam would be ‘a thing of the past’ within two years has virtually no chance of coming true, according to security company Sophos this week,” reported ZD Net with a proverbial straight face. “Sophos warned on Tuesday that spam will continue to be a major problem in 2006,” the story continued.
Way to go out on a limb there, Sophos.
The only value such an observation can possibly have is it gives people an excuse to thumb their noses at Gates. Shame on ZD Net for taking the bait.
