HP TouchPad Still a Factor for Mobile Advertising?
Though HP’s TouchPad was a victim of the company’s announcement that it would close the doors on its webOS device business, the tablet might still have some butts to kick — namely Android’s. According to Jumptap, a mobile ad agency, in about 10 days, the TouchPad has nearly caught up to Android in terms of ad impressions (or traffic) on its network. "Whatever is behind these numbers it does make one believe that producing an ad-subsidized tablet (think Amazon) might be a viable business model." (ZDNet, CNET)
Google+ Wins When Spammers Win
Google has found itself in shaky territory, thanks to Google+. With marketers looking to abuse the system acting faster than Google is when it comes to finding loopholes, it brings up an interesting question: "Is it actually in Google’s best interests to stop abuse of the system, or should they simply monitor what’s happening and address it later?" Crawlable comments, buying Google +1s and standard comment spamming are three areas that are ripe for spamming — areas that Google might want to leave open for a while. (Search Engine Watch)

Older Users Click More Facebook Ads Than Younger Users Do
A study from Social Code reveals that Facebook users over the age of 50 are 28.2 percent more likely to click an ad than users 18-29 years old. Also, women ages 50+ are 31.2 percent more likely to click ads than young adults. Social Code’s CEO points out that "while older users are adopting Facebook at a high rate, they are also the newest subset to join the social network, meaning they may not have high friend numbers, so ads are less likely to have social context." Google to Explore Re-Ranking Search Results Using +1 Data
Though it’s hardly surprising, a Google spokesman has confirmed that the search engine will "study the clicks on +1 buttons as a signal that influences the ranking and appearance of websites in search results." Data from +1 buttons won’t replace PageRank — if it’s actually used, it will be one of more than 200 signals used by Google to determine rankings. However, this potential move could be seen as Google unfairly using its search engine was bait to compel websites to use its +1 button and to boost Google+ as an alternative to Facebook. Oh, and spammers and black-hat SEOs will do their best to take advantage of this. (Wired.com, WebProNews)

Did Twitter Screw up Its Advertising Model?
Twitter might have just made its worst advertising blunder yet: A search for “hurricane irene” showed a comedic promoted tweet that offered no helpful information. While the tactic of piggybacking off of major events isn’t new, what’s noteworthy is Twitter’s allowance of such a promoted tweet to run on its site. “Twitter has a responsibility as a platform here, to ensure that people are seeing the best content possible. And this is largely unique to Twitter because of the way in which promoted tweets are served.” (Simply Zesty)
