Strong DM Sales Offset Sluggish Retail for Tiffany

Tiffany & Co., New York, had first quarter sales of $336.4 million, down 3 percent from the $345.1 million seen in the first quarter of 2000. Its net earnings were up only slightly, coming in at $30.8 million compared with $30.4 million a year earlier. The quarter ended April 30.

Of its three sales divisions, only direct marketing, with an 11 percent rise from $27.9 million to $31 million, showed an increase from last year. International retail sales were down 1 percent, from $147.4 million to $146.4 million, and U.S. retail sales fell by 6 percent, from $169.8 million to $159 million. Within the direct marketing division, catalog sales were up 8 percent and Internet sales rose 15 percent.
