Sports Authority Fined for Recorded Phone Messages

The Sports Authority Florida Inc. has been ordered to stop leaving pre-recorded messages and pay a civil fine of $54,750 for violating Florida’s telemarketing laws, according to news reports.

The fine is to be paid within 30 days, according to a ruling by an Orlando circuit court judge Tuesday. The legal action against Sports Authority will continue, however, because the company is contesting the 77 Do Not Call violations cited by the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services.

That agency began an investigation after complaints were filed from residents who received pre-recorded messages. Florida law prohibits the use of automated systems dialing numbers and leaving a pre-recorded message when a connection is made. The law applies to all state residents whether or not they are on the state or federal Do Not Call list.

Seventy-three complaints were included in the lawsuit.
