The move by the Direct Marketing Club of New York to become a chapter of the Direct Marketing Association is on hold for at least for another month.
There was a tie vote by the DMCNY board today on a motion to proceed with becoming part of the DMA.
The board now plans to call a general membership meeting to discuss the proposal in detail, according to Tom Brady, a board member who voted against the idea.
In addition, the group has extended its normal February deadline for renewals and new members to April 15. Members will have to renew by that point to be able to vote.
Board members heard a report today from a task force formed to explore the proposal . This led to “a lot more discussion, and the invoking of more negotiating points,” Brady said. The task force raised questions about “finances, communication, access to DMA properties and the responsibilities of various committees within the organization,” Brady continued.
The six-six vote resulted from the fact that three out of the 16 board members were not present. DMCNY President Vita Fortuna did not have a vote, Brady added. The agenda of the membership meeting will be to “discuss the destiny of the club,” Brady said. “I would imagine both sides will be able to present their sides of the story.” Asked about the mood at the meeting, Brady said, “There definitely was a lot of tension. There are lot of people very passionate about this.”
According to Brady, the members left the meeting unified on two things. One is that “we have to get back to our responsibilities as board members
