Spam accounted for 68% of all email traffic in 2005, according to e-mail security firm MX Logic Inc. This compares to 77% in 2004. Peaking at 78% in November, spam dropped to its lowest volume, 60%, in May, according to MX Logic.
“While significant advances in anti-spam technology have made it possible to relieve email users of unwanted commercial email before it hits their inboxes, spam still makes up the majority of all email traffic, imposing a significant burden on the Internet and on the effectiveness of email,” said Scott Chasin, chief technology officer, MX Logic, in a statement
In other findings, MX Logic reported that just 4% of unsolicited commercial e-mail in 2005 complied with the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing or Can-Spam Act, the nearly 2-year-old federal anti-spam law. This compares with 3% in 2004.
“Despite the consistently low levels of compliance, the CAN-SPAM Act has been fundamental in allowing the government and ISPs to take action against some of the top spammers,” Chasin said.
