Web Walk of Fame CAN MODERN SCIENCE make it possible for someone to leave his or her footprints in cyberspace?

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and classic celebrity licensing outfit Global Icons think so. The two groups plan a venture to honor – on the Web – the 2,163 stars of Hollywood Boulevard’s legendary Walk of Fame.

The forthcoming site (www.walkoffame .com) seeks to perpetuate the tradition, begun 42 years ago, of setting bronze stars in pink terrazzo engraved with artists’ names, thus paying tribute to the personalities who helped make Hollywood.

The site will also serve as a portal to the stars’ own sites and will eventually market their fan merchandise directly.

Administered by the Hollywood Chamber, the Walk of Fame was designated a cultural historic landmark by the city of Los Angeles in 1978.

“The Walk of Fame is known and visited by people all around the world,” says Hollywood mayor Johnny Grant.

“Now,” he adds, “people can experience some of that magic without leaving home.”

Yeah, but isn’t it his job to attract people to the actual Boulevard, where they can spend money locally?
