Another piece of legislation authorizing a comprehensive study of privacy laws across the U.S. has been introduced in Congress.
The Citizens Privacy Commission Act (S-851) is similar to Privacy Commission Act (HR-583) that Rep. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) introduced earlier in the year. The Senate bill is sponsored by Senate Government Affairs Chairman Fred Thompson (R-TN).
Both bills would give the panel 18 months to study existing federal, state and local privacy laws and regulations. But Thompson’s measure would establish an 11-member panel with a $3 million budget to examine current federal, state and local privacy-protection laws and regulations. The House bill calls for a 17 member panel and a budget of $5 million.
