Second Nintendo Marketing Executive to Depart in December

Robert Matthews, the senior director of consumer marketing at Nintendo of America, plans to leave the company in December.

Matthews is the second high-level marketing executive to announce his registration from the company in a month. His departure comes after the Japanese company moved its sales and marketing teams from Redmond, WA, to San Francisco and New York.

“After carefully considering whether or not to relocate to San Francisco, I ultimately decided that this was the ideal time to explore other career opportunities,” Matthews wrote in an e-mail to colleagues and friends yesterday. “I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the past eight years—record-breaking sales success, record profitability, and the award-winning launches of iconic brands such as Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and Wii, all of which became instant pop-culture sensations.”

Matthews, who joined Nintendo in 1999, oversees all of Nintendo’s advertising, consumer research, event marketing, sponsorships, partnership marketing and entertainment marketing. Prior to that, he worked in the film industry and at Ticketmaster.

His departure comes a month after George Harrison, Nintendo’s U.S.-based chief marketing officer, said he planned to leave the firm in December (Promo Xtra, Sept. 18, 2007).

As for the future, Matthews said he would remain on staff at Nintendo through December and is currently exploring job opportunities.

“My aperture is wide-open as I explore what’s next,” he said.

A replacement has not yet been named to fill Matthews’ position.

Nintendo is behind the widely popular Wii gaming system and DS handheld device. The Wii was the top selling game console in August, the company said.
