Sears, Roebuck and Co. is opening its first off-mall format locations to leverage its recent purchase of 50 Kmart and six Wal-Mart stores and grow its brand outside of malls.
The first 25 mid-sized stores, called Sears Essentials, are scheduled to open this spring with locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.
The product line up will include the best of Sears home and family life items, such as appliance, lawn and garden, tools, electronics, apparel and home furnishings. It will also leverage Kmart’s strengths in convenience-type items like health and beauty, pantry, household and paper products, pet supplies and toys, the company said.
The stores will feature a one-level racetrack design with exit cashiering and will be located in large, densely populated markets.
