Sara Lee Reports Sales and Promotion Spending up in 1Q

Sara Lee Corp. reported first-quarter net sales of $4.7 billion, an increase of 3% compared to $4.5 billion one year ago.

Net income was $230 million, a 25% drop from $308 million.

The company reported increased sales in four of its five lines of business (meats, bakery, beverage and household products); these were offset, in part, by lower sales in the intimates and underwear operations.

Total media advertising and promotion spending rose 7%, including a 10% increase in media advertising and a 4% increase in other advertising and promotions. The company reported higher spending in bakery, household products and intimates and underwear.
