Reader’s Digest is in talks to buy Reiman Publication for $800 million, according to the New York Post.
The deal could be particularly attractive at a time when advertising sales have spiraled downward since the Reiman magazines do not accept display advertising.
Reader’s Digest CEO Thomas Ryder is involved in the discussions, the report said.
Officials at Reader’s Digest could not be reached for comment.
Reiman, based in Greendale, WI, publishes country-oriented magazines and books including 10 national consumer magazines. The titles include, Light & Tasty, Country Discoveries, Taste of Home and Quick Cooking. The firm also published a catalog offering calendars, cookbooks, scenic photo books and other country-style products. Roy Reiman founded the company in 1964.
Last week, Pleasantville, NY-based Reader’s Digest announced that New Choices, a lifestyle magazine for the senior market, would cease publication with its May/June issue.
The firm blamed the effects of Sept. 11, the demise of the stamp-sheets, and the depressed advertising market for the closure. It also cited the effect of recent postal increases.
