Random House Inc. has entered the digital market with the debut of its unit for electronic books. The mega-publisher follows giant Time Warner as the second U.S. publisher to launch an electronic imprint. Random House, part of Germany’s Bertelsmann A.G., said it had set up a 20-book list of original electronic fiction and non-fiction. Included on the list are the memoirs of a moonlighting New York dominatrix, and a writer’s search for a baldness cure. All titles will be sold online as digital books or in single copies printed on demand and available at bookstores. The initial list features works with between 20,000 and 50,000 words. E-book outlets, Amazon .com and Fatbrain.com Inc. will also sell the books, which will be published starting early next year. The company also plans to set up Modern Library e-books, which would publish 100 works of classic literature.
