J.C. Penney Co., Inc. suffered an 11.4% dip in catalogs sales in October. They totaled $303 million, compared with $342 million during the same four-week period last year.
In addition, the retailer reported a 0.7% decline in comparable store sales. However, an 8.4% jump in Eckerd drugstore sales helped the company realize an 0.9% gain in sales for the month–to $2.4 billion.
The firm said that sales were soft in the week starting on Oct. 7, the start of U.S. military action against Afghanistan. However, they rebounded during the last two weeks of the month.
E-commerce sales, which are included in the catalog category, totaled $37 million, compared with $30 million for October 2000. For the year to date, they have totaled $210, compared with $167 million last year.
