Paper Use Said to Rise Despite Online Onslaughts

Paper use in the U.S. continues to rise even as more people go online in face of predictions to the contrary, according to the PaperCom Alliance, a paper industry trade group.

For example, overall mail volume rose from 166.4 billion pieces in 1992 to199.9 billion in fiscal 1998, according to member organization the U.S. Postal Service; Advertising mail volume reached a record of 82.87 billion pieces in fiscal 1998, up from 62.54 billion in 1992, according to the Advertising Mail Marketing Association. And between 1990 and 1998, annual paper consumption rose from 86.8 million tons to 99 million tons, according to the American Forest and Paper Association.

“Postal volume,. morning newspaper sales, the use of paper checks, have all increased as Internet usage has expanded,” said Alliance president Maynard H. Benjamin, in a statement. “While the Internet and paper products will surely compete in some areas, the general pattern is one of mutual growth and interdependence.”
