Online Spending Doubles For Holiday Season: Survey

Internet users more than doubled their online holiday spending during the 1998 holiday season, according to a survey by World Research.

During the 1998 holiday season, the respondents expected to spend an average of $339 (38% of their holiday purchases) online, up from an average of $154 (17% of their holiday purchases) online in 1997. Overall, the respondents reported having spent an average of $606 online in the previous 12 months.

Growth in Internet shopping was particularly strong among female Internet users. In 1997, female Internet users were a third less likely to shop online than male Internet users.

By the 1998 holiday shopping season, female Internet users were equally likely to shop online for holiday purchases. In addition, female Internet shoppers nearly tripled both their online holiday spending and the proportion of their holiday spending done online.
