A new bill tucked into New York State Gov. George Pataki’s budget would make New York one of 13 states in the nation allowing direct shipment of wine to consumers, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
As it stands now, not only can New York wineries not ship wine to out-of-state residents, but wineries outside New York can’t ship in.
In states that are considered reciprocal, their legislatures have said, “so long as our wineries can ship to consumers in your state, your wineries may ship to consumers in our state.”
Pataki’s proposal is the closest direct shipping has come to becoming law in New York State. Recently, the New York City Council voted to support direct shipping legislation. Massachusetts has a similar proposal on the table that stands a good chance of passage.
