The National Basketball Association is teaming up with the Cartoon Network for the second season of the network’s Rescuing Recess effort.
The initiative aims at recruiting 1 million volunteer hours nationally to support recess activities at schools around the country. NBA Cares, the league’s social responsibility arm, will participate and NBA players will appear at as many as 12 events to push the initiative in major markets.
“Rescuing Recess is a perfect fit for me to meet with kids and share how being active and healthy is an important part of being a student,” said Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade, national spokesperson for the program, in a statement.
Wade will appear in a national on-air spot to publicize the campaign, which the Cartoon Network created in March 2006.
Top volunteer-recruiting schools from each state can earn $2,500 in grants to support their school’s athletic activities programs, along with $250 gift certificates from the Sportime, Inc. physical education catalogue. The top-recruiting school nationally will win a $25,000 award and a special recess rally event to be revealed in June.
Partner organizations supporting the Rescuing Recess campaign include the PTA, the National Education Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
