in his NBA debut

Mr. Potato Head is making his NBA Debut—as a promotional giveaway to the first 5,000 fans attending tonight’s Detroit Pistons game in Auburn Hills, MI.

The Mr. Potato Head Sports Spuds, complete with a retro Detroit Pistons uniform, were created by Glendale, CA-based Promotional Partners Worldwide (PPW) through a licensing agreement with Hasbro. The giveaway is presented by Pistons’ sponsor Rock Financial and is part of The History Channel Presents Hardwood Classics Nights series.

“The nostalgia of Mr. Potato Head is in line with the time period that we are celebrating and fans both young and old can relate to the American icon,” said Debbie Guina, director of marketing promotions for the Detroit Pistons, in a statement.

The five-inch molded plastic spud wears a team jersey and has multiple choices of shoes, fun faces, hairstyles, a basketball and sweatbands.

“Mr. Potato Head is loved by all generations from young children to 50-somethings who once had them in their toy boxes,” said Cheryl Brancaccio, VP-sales and marketing for PPW, in a statement. “We created this line of customizable sports premiums as a way to help teams capitalize on America’s love of nostalgia.”

PPW said both major sports teams and minor league clubs are opting to offer giveaway promotions featuring Mr. Potato Head Sports Spuds. In addition to the Pistons, the MLB Philadelphia Phillies and the minor league hockey Idaho Steelheads, Fresno Falcons, Bakersfield Condors and Las Vegas Wranglers have all signed on.
