Most Industries See Decline in Total Ad Impressions in April

According to data from Nielsen Online, total ad impressions in April declined 11 percent from the previous month.

The consumer goods industry saw the biggest month-to-month increase in ad impressions in April as it saw a 3 percent rise to finish the month with 10.8 billion impressions.

Financial services was the only other industry of the 13 categorized by Nielsen Online to experience an increase, as its total ad impressions rose a modest 1 percent to 38.1 billion impressions.

The health sector saw the steepest drop, as its ad impressions plummeted 29 percent to 5.8 billion.

Public services saw its ad impressions drop 24 percent to 6.1 billion, while the travel industry experienced a 23 percent drop in total ad impressions to 8.7 billion in April.

Retail goods and services experienced a 21 percent month-to-month drop to 13.5 billion ad impressions during the month.

Total ad impressions for all industries declined to 163.7 billion in April, an 11 percent plunge.

InterActiveCorp led the way with 768.4 million sponsored link impressions in April, followed by Research In Motion Ltd. with 662.2 million.

eBay Inc. was third with 625.6 million sponsored link impressions, while Yahoo! Inc. finished April with 451.3 million impressions.

Amazon.com Inc. (363.9 million), Bank of America Corp. (319.8 million), Infospace Inc. (281.7 million), e-Unity Corp. (249.0 million), Target Corp. (283.4 million) and The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. (233.6 million) rounded out the top 10 companies in terms of sponsored link impressions in April.

For the week ended May 17, leaderboard (728 x 90) was the most popular ad size with 25,466 unique ads, or 28 percent of all dimensions, according to Nielsen.

Medium rectangle (300 x 250) was the second most popular with 23,912 unique ads, or 27 percent of all dimensions, followed by wide skyscraper (160 x 600) with 14,873 ads, or 17 percent of all dimensions.

Non-standard dimension was fourth with 11,147 unique ads during that week, or 12 percent of all dimensions.
