Mercedes Marketing Head Being Replaced: Report

DaimlerChrysler AG will replace its top executive for sales and marketing at its Mercedes Car Group division, according The Wall Street Journal.

Joachim Schmidt will be removed from his post “within a matter of days,” the report said.

Calls to DaimlerChrysler’s Detroit headquarters were not returned.

In a report published on Monday, German weekly magazine Der Spiegel said Schmidt has been shifted to another post and will be replaced by the European commercial vehicles division head, Klaus Maier.

The changes come after a down sales year for Mercedes-Benz. Revenue in Germany fell 6.6% last year, to 15.8 billion Euros ($21 billion U.S.) from 16.9 billion Euros ($22.5 billion U.S.) in 2003.

From January to September 2004, DaimlerChrysler’s ad expenditures grew 40.9% to $1.2 billion, according to Nielsen Media Research.
