MCI to Close Telemarketing Centers

MCI Inc. plans to shutdown four call centers to reduce cost and as a result of the federal Do-Not-Call list, which has grown to 60 million phone numbers.

Other reasons for the closures cited by the company include the recent federal court ruling that will allow regional telephone companies to charge other companies, such as MCI, more money for access to local phone lines.

About 2,000 telemarketing jobs will be lost at call centers in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina by the end of August. MCI emerged from bankruptcy in April. It has had several rounds of job layoffs in recent years.
