May Sales Up for Clothing Catalogers

Flowers weren’t the only thing in bloom last month. Several clothing catalogers reported sales up from last year for May.

Total company sales for Talbots in May increased 2% to $115.9 million, compared to $114.1 million for the same four-week period in 2002. Year-to-date sales for the seventeen weeks ended May 31 increased 1% to $510.9 million from $505.4 million in the previous year’s period.

Arnold B. Zetcher, chairman, president and CEO, noted in a statement that a “best customer” marketing initiative helped drive store traffic in the spring. Talbots expects to mail 48 million catalogs in 2003.

Combined catalog and Internet sales rose 15.9% in May, compared to the previous year’s period, for Jos. A. Bank Clothiers. Total sales for the month increased 17.6% to a record $21.4 million, compared with $18.2 million in May 2002.

Total sales for the men’s clothing cataloger and retailer for the four months ended May 31, 2003 increased 13.1% to $83.7 million, compared with $74.0 million in the comparable period in 2002. Catalog and Internet sales increased 15.8% in the period.

Abercrombie & Fitch posted net sales of $93.1 million for May 2003, a 9% increase over last May’s sales of $85.2 million. Year-to-date, the company reported a net sales increase of 11% to $439.8 million from $398.0 million last year.
