Maine to Track Marketing Spending on Drugs

Maine is close to enacting a law that will require drug companies to disclose how much they spend on marketing. Legislators approved the bill last week, designed to help cut drug costs by making pharmaceutical firms’ financials more transparent, Reuters reports.

If signed by Gov. John Baldacci, the law would take effect in January 2004 and require drug makers to disclose all advertising, marketing and promotions expenditures, including educational materials, food and entertainment and free drug samples, the report said. Vermont is the only state with a similar law.
