If the FBI comes calling and asks you to hand over data on a customer, don’t just volunteer the information in a patriotic fever. Wait for a subpoena.

That was the advice yesterday of Jerry Cerasale, senior vice president, government affairs for the Direct Marketing Association.

“The last thing we need is for people to be afraid to order from a catalog because they think we will be handing over a dossier on them to the police,” he said. “We don’t want to obstruct justice, but there are [legal] processes in this country.
