Live from CADM: Nonprofit Seminar Planned for May

The Chicago Association of Direct Marketing has scheduled its seventh annual DM for Nonprofits Seminar for Wednesday, May 18 at the Notebaert Nature Museum.

The event, part of CADM’s Direct From the Heart (DFTH) program, is designed to reach out to nonprofits that would like to use direct marketing but may not have deep pockets for education, said Holly Harle, who oversees the program.

Schedules speakers include Keith Rosenthal, director of individual giving, Greater Chicago Food Depository; Randy Hlavac, president, Marketing Synergy; and Sharon Tulos, assistant director of annual giving, DePaul University.

DFTH’s main mission is to work with nonprofits that do not have the resources to begin a DM program on their own, said Harle. Nonprofits who register with DFTH are hooked up with a CADM liaison and a marketing professional volunteer who will help them with things like strategy and creative. (Printing and fulfillment are handled by the nonprofits directly.)

Nonprofits currently working with DFTH include the Illinois Youth Advocacy Program, a child welfare organization working with CADM member Richard Arehart to develop a marketing plan; the Hinsdale Public Library Foundation, which is working with John Brahm to redesign a brochure; and Enterprise Kitchens, an assocation which provides transitional employment to women looking for permanent employment or education situations. Jerry Kaup is working with Enterprise on their marketing initiatives.

The nonprofit sector is one area of growth for CADM, said Michelle Blechman, president of the association. Entrepreneurs and ethnic marketers are also membership growth areas for CADM, which currently has about 1,500 members.

To cater to the growing ethnic sector, CADM has planned educational programs such as a luncheon event sponsored by the Hispanic Special Interest Group in the fall, said Blechman.
