List Veteran Howard Flood Dies

Howard Flood, a popular figure in the list business, died of cancer last Friday. Friends said he was 70.

Flood worked at McGraw Hill for over 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was the long-time general manager of McGraw Hill’s List Management Center.

He also pioneered international direct marketing, and was the first non-European board member of the European Direct Marketing Association.

Flood, a Pittsburgh native, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA and master’s in marketing and advertising. He spent his early career in various sales positions, including a stint at Duff Norton Co., a marketing analysis firm.

His entry into McGraw Hill was as an advertising salesperson for Chemical Week magazine.

“From my perspective, he was a great teacher and mentor, and he was a very giving person,” said Bill Denhard, who replaced Flood as head of the List Management Center.

“He was one of the genuine good guys,” added John Papalia, president of Statlistics. “He was a firm but fair client. He made me work very hard.”

After his retirement, Flood served for several years as councilman of the Borough of Sea Girt, NJ, and also as a member of the Sea Girt Fire Police.

Flood is survived by his wife, Diane, by a son, Howard E. Flood, Jr., and two daughters: Lynda Grannick and Susan Blinn.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan, NJ. There will be a memorial mass at 9:30 on Wednesday in St. Denis Church in Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
