The July 8 Direct Newsline article about Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter has a glaring error. The petition in question is not an “anti-do not call” issue. The petition is asking the FCC to simply assert its sole authority to regulate interstate telemarketing, since this is a power specifically given to the Commission by Congress. States do not and have never had to power to regulate interstate telemarketing. The petition would have absolutely no effect whatsoever on the National Do Not Call Registry, on which there are roughly 90 million phone numbers, so to refer to the petition as “anti-DNC” is misleading. The only person to whom the petition is “anti-do not call” is Steve Carter, and it is difficult to consider him a fair spokesperson for the industry.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my views on this matter.
